School’s out!

Here are some photos grabbed off my own instagram of what I’ve been busy with to make up for the lack of updates.

Schoolwork wise: I managed to tie up some loose ends with this poem constructed from certain words that I handpicked out of interviews conducted with a selected group of friends about this country’s declining culture.

Now to recharge, I’m allowing myself a few weeks of rest but for one reason or another I can’t let myself switch off completely. Always itching to work on something. ?!

Here are a handful of progress photos of a little project I’ve been working on for Mark Ford, it’s very much based off a sketch he did:

Isn’t this fantastic? I’m looking forward to getting a tattoo from him in the near future. Let me just say that trying to bite his style in order to successfully create a sculpture out of this sketch gave me a bigger headache than it really should. Looks nothing like his sketch. Needless to say, I’m really looking forward to fully painting it- just need Mark to toss me appropriate color choices before that can happen!

I had to take photos for my graduation showcase earlier tonight. I don’t even know why taking some photos can be such an impossible task. Fail. These three are the best I picked from the lot.

I’ve been up to my elbows in schoolwork, is writing a research paper REALLY as difficult as it seems? No matter how hard I try, I keep digressing in tiny ways that amount up to hours of time wasted.
School is intense! Just a few more weeks, just a few more weeks.
Proper updates to come soon, but in the meantime here’s a website update: I found some time to reconstruct my website entirely. I’m not 100% happy with it, but this will do for now.

Momma bunny and baby bunny. I got sick of working on school assignments so I took a break (I was told that taking a break from drawing by drawing other things doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t it really?) and drew something up for my mother’s birthday, which is quickly approaching in a few days’ time. She hates when people spend money on things for her so she might be glad to know that I didn’t spend a cent on this. Ha haha ha.

Sigh. Now it’s back to tackling assignments.

More concept sketches that I’ve been working on. Again.. it’s for school.
For those unfamiliar and interested in these little oriental mask-wearing rats I’ve been hashing out lately, ‘wayang’ is term referring to Chinese street opera that was often performed on the streets of Singapore way back in the 19th century. Actors would don masks that were painted in certain colors which symbolized the general disposition of the character. Eventually they switched to painting their faces as they found it difficult to portray emotion behind a mask.

Interestingly enough, the word ‘wayang’ in modern context also refers to an act of pretense- I’m intrigued by that duality within that one single word.

Sometimes we forget that we are essentially rats participating in this rat race. All of us burdened by the weight of carrying a grimy painted facade of our own.

Here are two photos I found within my documentation files showing how the little rats have progressed ever since they’ve been primed.

Concept sketches to accompany the little clay rats I’ve been making, illustrating my idea of making my little rat babies wear Chinese opera masks. Sneakily playing with the duality that exists within the word “wayang”.

I hate school, hope you like these though!

Haphazard video showing the process of a rat baby coming to life!… or something. Vine is a really swell application! My camera, however, is not.

Here’s a super quick sketch for the very talented Brian Thomas Wilson, since it’s his birthday today I thought I’d draw him a vegan-donut-loving goat.
